Then it’s probably Previa. Toyota reliability, made at the same time as the A80 Supra and all the other great Japanese cars. Available with a supercharged fuel injected 2.4L, 5-speed manual, and AWD (RWD standard). Front midengined family hauler. Made 161 hp which was 11 hp more than a 1997 Mustang’s 3.8L V6. Seats 7 (US Spec) and weighs less than a Lexus RC. Optimized weight distribution, low center of gravity, and pretty easy to work on due to SADS (Supplemental Accessory Drive System). Add in dual sunroofs and speed sensitive powered steering and it’s obvious that Previa is what you need.

Ours lived 15 years in the northeast without a speck of rust on the body, or anything more than surface rust underneath...

The answer is Hi-ace. Or simply van in the us for the model year. Optional true 4wd. And you sit on the engine access hatch. Kinda like a vanagon in terms of use profile and weirdness involved in service but somewhat less finicky and no pop top (at least none that I have seen). I have never seen one that didn’t hold oil like a collander, but those have been long neglected and with well over 200k on the clock. By my logic they seem like rolling fire hazards, but they are interestingly fun to drive and surprisingly well powered and capable

A couple other features that aren’t so special now, but were rare at the time:

Stowable rear seats. In (I think) every other minivan, you had to remove the rear bench if you wanted to haul something, but in the Previa, the rear seats split 50/50 and folded flat against the sides. That was super versatile and meant you could reconfigure on the fly (and of course folding up the seats was tons easier than moving a bench in general).

Rear air conditioning. Separate blower vents for the back mounted in a bar across the top, aft of the front seats. Still a battle to get cool air all the way to the back, but much better than the configurations in contemporary vans.

Nahhhhh 230hp, 368ft-lb stock, independent suspension, RWD, almost 30mpg, 300+hp with a tune, space for days, can be had as a Westfalia camper.

And when the answer isn’t Previa, but you still need a badass Japanese minivan…

Kinja'd!!!

Then it’s probably Elgrand. Nissan reliability, made at the same time as the R34 Skyline and all the other great Japanese cars. Available with a turbo diesel fuel injected 3.2L, 4-speed automatic, and AWD (RWD standard). Front engined family luxobarge. Made 150 hp which was as much as a 1997 Mustang’s 3.8L V6. Seats 7 or 8 (JDM Spec) and weighs less than a Lexus LX. Sort-of-Optimized weight distribution, interesting centre of gravity, and pretty easy to work in due to the never ending luxury - it’s probably better to work in than your office. Add in the dual electric sunroofs and speed sensitive ABS brakes and it’s obvious that Elgrand is what you need.

Well, it’s not quite like the Previa.

But it’s a 3.0L+ JDM luxury minivan with RWD or 4WD - so it’s awesome too.

One of my former coworkers (now retired), is still driving the ‘93 she’s had since new. It’s got rust on the front side of the rear wheel arches, but that’s about it. I popped my head under it once expecting it to be all rotten underneath, but to my surprise it was nice and solid. Not bad for 20+ years of Chicago winters.

I saw a Previa at Walmart the other day, and totally geeked out over it. I tried to explain to my wife why this spaceship, wasn’t your average minivan. She didn’t get it. So I’m glad some one does.

Also I'd love to do a rotary swap into on of these, or maybe a Honda F20C if it fits.
